A living Spirit
(From the Woodsman’s Notebook)

A glimmer here, a movement there, you like to show that you’re still here.
I here you sometimes late in the night, toying with me just out of sight.
Moving around throughout the house, like the little proverbial church mouse.
Even though I know you are there, I keep on searching; but who knows where.
I feel your presence but no one in sight. Where are you on this very night?
I feel you over my shoulder watching my every move, thinking to myself
you will show yourself soon. Night time to day time back to night starts a
new game with you just out of sight.

When does a man learn to quit?
(From the Woodsman’s Notebook)

When does a man learn to quit? When does he decide to end it and give up? At what point does he say enough is enough? Where does he go from here? How many times must he be beaten down? Can you tell me when it will stop? How many times must a man fall? How many times must he try? What does a man have to do? What should he do to survive? Where does a man go to get help? When he feels he is only a grain of sand. What can a man do to prove himself? What can he do to get by? When can a man get ahead? When can he say again I can? I ask you Lord what can I do to prove my worthiness? What does a man do to be a man? What does a man do to prove to himself? That life is worth all that it can? How many times must a man look up before he sees the sun? What can he do for himself? When even God doesn’t seem to be around? Where does a ma find serenity and peace? How does he show others love? When does a man learn to quit? When does he decide to give up?
